Autumn and the Seasons

I love the fall. Always have. I think it’s because I love being cozy and warm. I love layering and sweaters and mittens and scarves.

I love the contrast of the sharp blue sky against the gorgeous and inspiring colours of the trees.Image

I do not like winter. Toooooo cold. I live in fleeces and knits and snuggies. (Not really.)  (Because the cat took my snuggie.)

I love summer. But when you are a gal who perspires… a lot…. not always a fun time. Bring on the pony tail (in a fabulous way, of course) and the capris. And always have a secretly hidden hankie to help hideaway the excess sweatage. ( Yes, “sweatage’ is a word. Or at least, it is now.)

Spring…well… spring is meh. It’s rainy. And slushy. And grey. And just….meh. One redeeming feature of spring; that’s when my Birthday is. Yay

But nothing beats the happiness and warm coziness of Fall. The first brisk tang in the air, the crunch of the leaves, the overall fuzzy feeling when you come in from the outside and have that warm rush of indoors smelling of beef stew and veggies roasting….. ahhhhh.

Usually though; it’s just me slugging my twenty million pounds of stuff through the backdoor as I juggle my handbag and coffeemug and packages to unlock the door and come into the kitchen that smells slightly of coffee and ….something….

But I love the fall. From all the warm and ready for roasting vegetables at the market, to the soups and stews and crockpot meals that just don’t seem right in the summer…..to the FASHIONS…..this post I know is more about the season than the clothing but….I promise. A fall accessory post is ON IT’S WAY!

Now, get out there and enjoy the weather!

Giving up?

slippersOkay so there’s another very alarming trend I’ve seen the past few months (dare I say, years?)

And I don’t mean ‘trend’ in fresh plaid, or structured jackets, or funky new bangles. Oh no. No, I don’t.

I mean the ALARMING number of women (and some men) who wear and think it’s OKAY to wear Pajamas in Public.

And let me point out: I don’t mean JUST PJ pants here. Oh no. I mean, full on PJ sets. PAJAMA SETS!!!! AND SLIPPERS!!!!!

The ONLY time pajamas in public are marginally acceptable:

It is 4am and you’re rushing a family member to the hospital

It is 8:15am and your alarm didn’t go off and you are rushing to get your garbage/recycling to the front curb.

I don’t live in a rural setting. I live in one of the biggest urban areas in Canada.  We have a plethora of shops available that carry wonderful clothing to cover your hot bod in – from discount big box stores to haute couture shops – there is NO excuse for why you can’t get dressed in the morning. And recently I have seen this disturbing trend more and more often. And I KNOW I’m not the first one to be blogging about this, either.

PJ pants aren’t acceptable either – if you’re taking the time to pull on pants, why not jeans, khakis, Or cords. Or heck, capris and boots, it IS fall after all. While you’re at it, thrown on a snug fit T and a fitted buttondown over that. OR a cute sweater with a trendy Big Print…all over the place for fall…go crazy and wear BLACK jeans….TWO MINUTES to get dressed. And JUST as EASY as pulling on PJ pants.

canvasSuper cute!  AGE Appropriate!Imagesweater Find these looks at  Nygard.com

I have never met any parent who can’t take TWO minutes to pull on a pair of jeans and a Tshirt (and undergarments, please) when getting up first thing. Yes, Little One is crying, Number Two is covered in toothpaste and Number Three just informed you the dog is wearing Her school uniform….but …. take the two minutes to pull on something fresh, clean, and new.

Just taking that one moment – pulling on clean, fresh items – will help you face YOUR day. Yes, there are many people depending on you, but if you can’t take the Two Minutes in the Morning to take care of yourself that’s gonna colour your whole day.

So take a bit of pride in your appearance. Even if it is jeans and a Tshirt. Or funky button down. Or layered henley T’s that you got for a steal at Old Navy when you went Back To School Shopping for Numbers Two and Three.

Don’t give up. Put on some clothes. Clothes that fit, that make you feel good, and help you feel ready for the day.

To Browse, Perchance to Buy

Ah Monday evenings. Usually the time to catch up on the weekends paperwork, work on the schedules, and after 7pm, process the weekly markdowns. It’s quiet. I get a lot done.

Quiet night = lots of “just lookings”.

Can I say how much I hate that phrase. It’s like we’ve been programmed to respond to say that the SECOND we come in the store. Of course you’re just looking. At our bright lights, adorable outfits, funky new arrivals….and oh, I digress.

Here’s the thing: when the salesperson says “Hi!”

We KNOW you’re just looking. And WE are just saying Hello!

Letting you know that we are aware of your presence, and we value the fact that you chose to come into our store to possibly purchase a new happy item with your hard earned money.

So don’t be alarmed or immediately blurt “Just looking”…..we don’t bite.

Often.

By the way. Fall is coming. The colours are already arriving… warm wine tones, deep olives, rich purples and sharp emerald greens are the go-tos for this Fall!

Feminine structured jackets, for office wear paired with  the printed pant in subtle tone on tone is what will set the gossip goin’ at the watercooler! And DON’T forget to accessorize….mock croc handbags, and longer multi-tone necklaces are must-haves.

Thigh Gap?

This is quite possibly the most ridiculous trend I’ve ever heard of.

Thigh gap. Puh-leease.
Maybe, if you’re born with that body type.
For the rest of us… it is what it is. Spanx type shapers and baby powder. Oh yeah.

Love the skin you’re in. Be fabulous, because you are.

On being 40, a size 14, and….fabulous!

I’m 40. There. I said it.

I’m still processing how I got to be here, 40.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy. I’m content…I’ve been there, done that, and am fine where I am.

After years of struggling with weight gain, weight loss (Thank you, thyroid) I have settled into a comfy size either 12 or 14, and honestly, I’m okay with that. I mean, that cheesecake  isn’t gonna finish itself now, is it. No.

I work in women’s fashions, specifically fashions for the over 25 set.

A wonderful Canadian company, moderately priced, great quality pieces that mix and match well together.

I love my job.  I get to shop and play with clothing all day. And dress women of all shapes and sizes.

I’ve always loved to shop, and dress my friends. I even make my own clothes (sometimes) and know how garments should fit, and be worn.

(Yes, Barbie was my favourite toy – because she could do anything. Wear anything, do everything, perfectly coiffed and accessorized. And she had like, 5 horses.)

This blog is my view on things I see everyday. Women. Their body issues. Fashions. Accessorizing. Life. And maybe snippets of my former life as a touring performer. Maybe. If you’re good.

I hope that my writing helps you, makes you laugh, or at least, gives you something to read whilst you’re doing…whatever you’re doing.

Best,

Shannyn

It’s true. Nothing completes a look like the final touches.

A necklace adds a bit of flair and interest, earrings frame the face.

Rings and bracelets accent, and a scarf adds a chic edge on a jacket or handbag.

So there. Do it.

Often at work when I’m offering accessories to complete an outfit I hear: “I never remember/I never wear” Blah blah blah EXCUSES!!!!hanger2

Get a nice jewelry box!                   Hang up a nice frame for your necklaces!

Match up your outfit the night before AND hang the jewelry over the hangers!! Just do it!

Two Make your own frames, if you’re a DIY kinda gal.

The next time you see someone  and you think “Wow. She looks great. I wish I could…” First off; stop the negative thoughts. YOU CAN. You WILL!!

Secondly; notice what sets her apart. Is it her confidence ? (Yes!)   Is it her outfit, nicely co-ordinated? (Yes!) Are her shoes neat (YES!)  and …does she accessorize her outfit? Again, YES!

So do it.  Just do it. Have I said it enough yet….just do it.
